The Hallyu Wave has journeyed from annyeong to namaste, securing a fervent stronghold in India. In 2024, India surpassed traditional hubs like the U.S. and Thailand to become the top country for Hallyu-related news coverage, according to the "2024 Global Hallyu Trend Analysis Report". It was created by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in collaboration with the Korea Culture Information Service Agency. They studied 680,000 pieces of Hallyu-related coverages in news and social media between October 2023 and September 2024.
During that year, India published 905 Hallyu-related articles and social media mentions, nearly double the volume of the U.S. This soaring obsession with K-Pop, K-Dramas, and even K-Food signals a cultural shift driven by demographics, digital adoption, and strategic localization. K-Pop dominated India’s Hallyu landscape, accounting for 41% of all Hallyu content mentioned in 2024. Among the groups, BTS, BLACKPINK, and NJZ (NewJeans) led the charge, generating 371 articles—nearly 40% of India’s total K-Pop coverage. In this, social media also played a key role: JungKook’s solo album “Golden” ignited 15,745 mentions in Q1 2024 alone, while fan-driven hashtags trended nationally.
