With its success, it could even make it into the list of top SBS dramas with the highest ratings since 2020.
A Shift In Episode Models - How K-Drama Series With Fewer Episodes Have Become The Majority In The IndustryK-Drama StoriesFeb 25, 2025
The SBS drama features a most impressive cast that includes idol-actors BTOB's Yook SungJae and WJSN's BoNa (Kim JiYeon). Then there's celebrated veteran Kim JiHun who adds a particular edge to the series that viewers just can't get enough of. The historical fantasy brings viewers into a royal palace plagued by life-threatening spiritual forces. Because of this, YeoRi (Kim JiYeon) and Yun Gap/Gang Cheol (Yook SungJae) team up to aid King Yi Seong (Kim JiHun) in bringing peace to the royal palace and protect its people.
When people think about K-Dramas, what normally comes to mind are the heart-fluttering romance scenes that produce a swarm of butterflies in their stomach. However, "The Haunted Palace" shows once again that there's a place for the supernatural, along with palace politics and drama to bring it into such high regard among viewers. But why exactly is it doing well?
Riding On Trending Momentum
When a highly rated drama ends, viewers always maintain some form of lingering feelings toward the series. Once the final credits start to roll, audiences start to feel a noticeable hole where that series once occupied. They may even become curious about the show set to take its place and whether or not they'll be interested to watch it. This could definitely ring true for "The Haunted Palace", as it took the place of another highly rated SBS series, "Buried Hearts".
These two series stood on different sides of the genre spectrum. While "The Haunted Palace" is based in a historical setting, tackling meddlesome spirits and fantastical beings, "Buried Hearts" took place in the present day with its main protagonist up against a widely renowned, yet corrupt law professor. One, if not the only, similarity could be found in the office/palace politics and the antagonists' ongoing greed to have more. At the time, "Buried Hearts" was vastly different from its drama counterparts that were airing around the same time. But it was in these differences that captivated audiences and along with the compelling plot, convinced them to remain invested until the very end.
By the very end of its run, "Buried Hearts" reached an impressive all-time high of 15.4% viewership rating. This puts it in the top 10 of SBS dramas with the highest ratings since 2020. Being the K-Drama to take its place, "The Haunted Palace" is certainly set up for success as viewers remain to fill in the void that "Buried Hearts" left behind - and it seems to be doing a great job so far. Over the course of 6 episodes, it has remained around the 9% viewership rating and netizens have been consistently showering the series with praise. As it's predicted to have 16 episodes, the series' halfway point is just around the corner, and at the rate it's going, it could take advantage of the momentum and become a top drama during its run.
