Cults in the Korean society have been a hot topic within the Korean community these days, generally viewed negatively by most of the Korean public. With the release of the 8-episode K-Documentary Series, "In The Name Of God: A Holy Betrayal" last March 3, a lot of news and public opinions tackling controversial religious leaders who were presented in the documentary. MBC produced the documentary about the controversial cults existing in Korea, which was released by Netflix. Being available in one of the biggest OTT platforms to date, the topic also has sparked a discussion among international viewers as well. Big names in entertainment have also fueled the talks about cults, with news (and rumors) about some celebrities being involved in these cults.

One of the figures that was presented in the controversial docuseries was the leader of a Korean cult, Christian Gospel Mission (also called CGM or JMS). 3 episodes of the documentary was dedicated to JMS and showed the cult leader, Jung MyungSeokโ€™s rise as the leader of the said church, and how he was embroiled in controversy years after. The cult leader was sentenced to 10 years prison after being convicted of rape and sexual assault, yet his numerous followers continue to believe that he is innocent.
