Would you get divorce insurance when you're so in love that you get married? You might find this idea absurd. Consider divorce as inevitable as illness or accident. Will you cover heartbreak and alimony as you would against health or car insurance?

"The Divorce Insurance" is the latest K-Drama starring charismatic Lee DongWook. Unlike your typical divorce dramas, this one throws us a wild concept—a task force literally creating a divorce insurance policy. The million-dollar question here? Will anyone buy the idea, or will it fail?

tvN's Monday and Tuesday drama, "The Divorce Insurance," aired last March 31 and is a pure romantic comedy that unfolds when the divorcee and anti-marriage employees at an insurance company's product development team introduce divorce insurance to address the generation's social issue.

The first episode follows Lee DongWook's portrayal of Noh KiJun as he develops the divorce insurance project. Ahn JungMan (played by Lee KwangSoo), Na DaeBok (played by Kim WonHae), Kang GangDeul (played by Lee JooBin), and Cho AhYoung (played by WJSN Exy) are the remaining members of the divorce project team. Rounding off the cast is KiJun's former spouse, Jeon NaRae (played by Lee DaHee), adding yet another aspect of tension and intrigue to this 'special project.'

What better place to try this quirky concept than a wedding fair? Talk about irony! In episode one, Lee DongWook said that marriage and divorce share one thing—happiness. Do you think so too? Or does it leave you questioning all you think you know about fidelity and love?

Dose Of Comedy

Whereas divorce usually involves heartbreak and complex paperwork, "The Divorce Insurance" introduces a dose of comedy to the situation. Comedian-actor Lee KwangSoo plays an offbeat character that anchors the drama but makes it lighter as well as more profound.

Adding depth to the storyline, Lee DongWook's character experienced three divorces because he cannot do one-night stands. His personal struggles and failure in relationships make him the best person to lead this quirky yet profound insurance project. He is collaborating with a team that includes divorcees, individuals opposed to marriage, and those approaching divorce.

Korea's Divorce Rate

Divorce is not just a fictional dilemma. According to Statistics Korea, 18% of marriages between five and nine years old end in divorce. 16.7% of marriages are four years or less, while 16.6% are 30 years or more.

Age also plays a significant role. For men in their late 40s, there are 7.2 divorces per 1,000; for women in their early 40s, 8.0.

The number of divorces in 2024 will be 91,000— a decrease of 1,000 cases from the previous year, or a 1.3% decrease.

Although Korea doesn't have the highest rate of divorce, it's a serious issue in other countries. The Maldives has the highest divorce rate globally; next are Kazakhstan, Russia, Moldova, and Belarus.

As it turns out, the divorce insurance isn't so far-fetched after all.
