The webtoon that single-handedly revived the public's interest in Korean traditional all-women theatre troupes called yeoseong gukgeuk (์ฌ์ฑ๊ตญ๊ทน) - "Jeong Nyeon" by Seo Ireh and Namon is the revolutionary feminist webtoon that is now getting a K-Drama adaptation.
For those who might not know, yeoseong gukgeuk is a form of musical theatre where pansori is the primary mode of storytelling. It was hugely popular in South Korea in the 1950s, but it has become extinct over time. In yeoseong gukgeuk, an all-female ensemble of theatre actors would take on roles of both women and men to narrate passionate and intense stories of war and love. These actresses gained immense popularity and love, comparable to that of the K-Pop idols now. However, with the era of film and television, gukgeuk slipped into unfortunate oblivion. Disappointed at the fading of one of the most progressive and treasured art forms of South Korea, Seo Ireh and Namon were prompted to take up the subject of this lost art for "Jeong Nyeon" and their webtoon ultimately went on to win the 2019 "Manhwa Of The Year" award.
